Guided Walks

RSPB Abernethy: Secrets of the Caledonian Forest

Picture
A Guided walk to discover the wonders of Abernethy Forest, home of the Capercaillie, "Scottish/Parrot" Crossbill and Crested Tit as well as a wealth of other plants and animals special to the Scottish Highlands. Discover the secrets of this relic of the ancient Forest of Caledon with an informative guided walk through the pines.
Listen for the distinctive calls of "Crestie" and Crossbills.....Parrot, Common and Scottish are all present, providing a great opportunity to home in on the id and learn all about the problematic "Scottish" birds.

Golden Eagle is possible from secluded vantage points and in spring the air will be filled with the songs of Willow Warbler, Redstart and Tree Pipit and we may even see some unique "Tree Nesting" Swifts.

Charge is £20pp for approx a two to three hour walk. (min. of 2 persons).

The Cairngorms: In Search of Mountain Birds (Summer only)

The Cairngorms. One of the most stunning mountain ranges in Europe if not the world. Home of the enigmatic Ptarmigan and in summer Dotterel and Snow Bunting breed around the high Arctic plateau. I have been wildlife guiding here for many years.....before that I even spent time building some of the footpaths, so I know the range well! Knowing where the birds are saves you both time and effort, though of course the walk itself is a wonderful experience.
Join me for an expedition in search of Ptarmigan, and from mid-may onwards Dotterel as well, which will of course require a longer walk. We may even come across a Mountain Hare or spot one of the local Eagles soaring nearby. Rumours have it there is still a Snowy Owl up there somewhere, though I'll be honest and say I've never seen it, a bit like the Loch Ness Monster! Ring Ouzel are found on the lower slopes, Merlin, Peregrine and Red Grouse also frequent the rocky landscape....a day in the Scottish hills is an unforgettable experience.
Even in summer the weather in the Scottish Hills can be fickle, being part of a guided walk ensures safety worries are taken care of...you'll keep on the right paths and I'll check the weather forecast! Local knowledge of conditions is useful to save a wasted day if the cloud comes in or the weather takes a turn for the worst. Safety of course is of utmost importance, and the walk for Dotterel in particular will only take place in reasonable "summer" mountain conditions. The routes are all on well established footpaths and tracks.
