After a very successful private tour last autumn we will be running this tour again in 2025 open for bookings. This will be the 25th year that I’ve guided on the Hebrides so I’m looking to celebrate ! We will spend four nights on Lewis, exploring the Islands of Lewis & Harris at peak migration time, with a mouth watering history of autumn migrants turning up on the Hebrides in autumn, anything is possible. As well as the spectacle of regular species migrating through such as Thrushes arriving from Iceland and Scandinavia, large number of Geese and Wildfowl, there is the chance of seeing both Golden and White-tailed Eagles, Merlin, Hen Harriers and other raptors and sea-watching for Shearwaters and Petrels on the way, it really is a bird filled adventure. Besides the vast areas of open moor, Lewis is a mosaic of small villages full of gardens and shelter to check for passerines, especially at the north end where we will pay a visit to the famed Butt of Lewis.
Day 1. Arrive Grantown on Spey where we will spend the night.
Day 2. Set off for Ullapool where we cross to Stornoway, species seen on this crossing before include Sooty, Great, Manx and Cory’s Shearwater, Storm and Leach’s Petrel as well as Minke and Humpback Whales.
Day 3. A full day exploring the Isle of Lewis, from the west coast beaches and shrorelines of Borvas up to the Port Ness and the Butt of Lewis. On the way exploring some of the cover for migrants around the various villages. Plenty of raptor landscape to keep an eye out for Eagles, Hen Harrier and Merlin too.
.Day 4 We head south the stunning landscape of the Isle of Harris, climbing through the hills on to Tarbat and the gorgeous golden Luskentyre bay. More chances of Eagles and sea ducks in the bays.
Day 5. A spot of sea watching on the west of Lewis and a chance to explore the very remote western coastline out to Miavaig
Day 6. After a morning birding the woods around Stornoway Castle we take the return ferry back to Ullapool and head for an overnight stay in Grantown.
