Join us for a spectacular three day birding tour of the wild and windswept North Aberdeenshire Coast. One of the most under-watched areas of the UK, your guide John Poyner has worked and birded this region for over 20 years and knows it better than most. From hidden coves and migrant gullies to miles of sweeping beaches and secluded estuaries, including the spectacular Loch of Strathbeg Reserve the area boasts a myriad of habitats and bird life. After a night in Grantown on Spey we head across to spend two nights on the Aberdeenshire Coastline, returning for your last night back in Grantown. It really is a bird packed few days with a target list of around 100 species.
Day 1. Arrival at the Grant Arms Hotel
Day 2. We head off towards the most northern tip of the region exploring the coast around Fraserburgh and RSPB Loch of Strathbeg reserve. Waders, Gulls and a bit of sea-watching for passing Terns ,Skuas and Shearwaters is always a must. Making our way south we call in to check several well-known migrant hot-spots and finish our day at a comfortable small hotel near the Ythan Estuary.
Day 3. A full day exploring the sweeping coastline around the Ythan Estuary, famous for its teeming flocks of waders, Terns, Eiders and fishing Ospreys. We also visit several lesser known freshwater lochs and woodland habitats. Early migration should now be underway so there’s always a chance of any rarity turning up as well as the first returning wintering species. Bird lists for the day easily climbing up above 60 species.
Day 4. We take a leisurely drive back towards Grantown after a final few hours at a few more spots around the estuary, or even a bit of sea-watching for off the nearby dunes depending on weather and conditions.
